Hunting Society
Boč on Kozjak
Hunting Song

History
The organization was founded in 1946. At that time, the hunting club, known as Lovska Družina (LD), managed 2,327 hectares of hunting area, and 15 hunters or members were registered. Initially, the club comprised two LDs in the current LD area—Selnica and Boč na Kozjaku. Their cooperation led to the merger of the two hunting clubs in 1950, with the joint decision to name the LD "Boč na Kozjaku." Its first president was Jože Gomivnik, and the earliest records of this LD date back to 1955.
The aftermath of the Second World War left the hunting ground empty and abandoned. Predators were abundant, and poaching was widespread. The 1943 fire in Zagozd also caused significant damage, reducing the forest for many years. Interestingly, it was in this part of the hunting ground that chamois settled after the fire. Thanks to professional planning, management, and the dedication of hunters, the game population improved significantly. The population of small game increased as well. Pheasants were introduced as early as 1956, followed by rabbits in 1968, with 34 rabbits released. The wild rooster population initially thrived after the war but later declined. Wild boar and deer also began to appear.
According to records, Mr. Peterka hunted the first wild boar in 1955, and the first deer was hunted in 1952 on Veliki Boč. The hunting plan for 1969 included:
-
32 roe deer,
-
2 chamois,
-
70 rabbits,
-
65 pheasants, and
-
5 wild boars.
In 1972, Jože Žiberna hunted a boar weighing 183 kilograms when cleaned. However, the increasing population of wild boars caused damage and negatively affected the populations of wild roosters and field partridges. In May 1979, Anton Zupanič captured a wild rooster.
The LD adopted new rules and regulations at its general meeting in 1976, and on September 16, 1976, it signed a twinning agreement with LD Lenart, which remains in effect today. Since its establishment, the position of president or elder of the LD has been held by:
-
Jože Gomivnik (1946–1971),
-
Rudi Podgornik (1971–1990),
-
Maks Garmut (1990–2002),
-
Štefan Cmrečnjak (2002–2004),
-
Anton Pečovnik (2004–2008),
-
Jože Deželak (2008–2011),
-
Boris Mušič (2011–2018),
-
Jože Deželak (April 2018–June 22, 2018),
-
Rado Triplat (June 22, 2018–September 11, 2020),
-
Boris Mušič (September 19, 2020–present).
Between 1983 and 2003, Vera Arnuš served as treasurer for 20 years. The longest tenure in LD history is that of Jože Žiberna, who served as secretary from 1971 to 2003.
The LD decided relatively late to renovate the Zgornji Kovač homestead, transforming it into a hunting lodge. The initiative for this project came from Anton Gradišnik, while elder Maks Garmut, who was also the president of the construction committee, spearheaded the effort. Many members contributed to the construction, particularly Anton Fike and elder Maks Garmut. The hunting lodge was completed in 1995.
The hunting ground's boundaries are as follows: starting from the middle of the Drava River at the Zgornji Vurmat municipality border, the boundary follows the Drava River to the Spodnji Slemen and Spodnja Selnica municipality borders, then continues along the Bistrica stream to the state border with Austria. It then runs westward along the state border to the Spodnji Vurmat and Zgornji Boč municipality borders, heading south towards Zrnkov graben, and follows the Šturmov stream back to the starting point along the Drava River.
After the adoption of the new Game and Hunting Act in 2004, the Boč na Kozjaku Hunting Society signed a 20-year concession agreement on June 19, 2009. The society has managed the hunting ground excellently, consistently fulfilling the annual hunting ground plans. As part of the Pohorje Hunting Management Area, the Boč na Kozjaku Hunting Society oversees a total area of 3,449 hectares, including 3,239 hectares of hunting area and 210 hectares of non-hunting area. As of January 1, 2023, the society has 42 members, with an average member age of 59.11 years.
